Challenge Yourself

Ward Valley is situated at the Southern frontier of Marlborough, New Zealand. A wild, untamed landscape with a unique terrior comprised of high altitude, dry air, temperature extremes and deep clay.

Our challenge was to create a brand that could encapsulate not only the climatic characteristics of this unique landscape, but also the tenacity and grit of the winemakers themselves.

Our Approach

Marlborough is first and foremost famous for producing vibrant, world-class Sauvignon Blancs. Based on the key creative idea of 'challenge yourself', we developed a story and identity that redefined the Southern region of Marlborough - capturing its wild, harsh, windswept conditions that are perfect for growing Pinot Noir - a far cry from the expected sundrenched Marlborough category norms.

Visual Identity

Our visual identity for Ward Valley drew inspiration from the harsh Southern NZ landscape - sharp angled typography and moody landscape imagery reflective of the local mountain ranges and valleys.

Labels & Packaging

Our packaging approach was led a by a clear brand architecture to help differentiate their two ranges. This resulted in a premium, moody label design for the Ward Valley Mt Victoria Block Pinot Noir - a rich and elegant vintage and also their signature wine for the export market.

For the ‘Olivia’ Pinot Noir Rosé we crafted a label with a lighter, less serious tone to reflect it’s position within the Ward Valley product range and also for the time of year it’s best enjoyed - Summer. A refreshing drop that’s perfect for a hot, lazy afternoon.

"The Ward Valley expression is truly inspired by the textures, elements and harsh conditions of South Marlborough"
James Leary – Ward Valley
